We caught up with Georgia Meek, Tileyard Education student, Spitfire Audio Scholarship awardee, and the latest talent addition to the Tileyard Stage at Wakefield’s Long Division Festival.

So Georgia, tell us about you as an artist?

Outside of writing and producing for others, I release alt-electro pop under my own name. I put my first single ‘Bare’ out a few years ago, which hit New Music Fridays on Spotify across Europe and gained loads of attention in both national and international press. It was pretty crazy – I’d always performed in bands and indie groups, so releasing a huge piano ballad on my own was so daunting.

Since then I’ve been lucky enough to perform some insane shows, including festivals like Radio 1’s Big Weekend with BBC Introducing.

Last year I put out my debut EP ‘Pop Culture’, which had a load of plays on ITV2’s Love Island as well as features in Ministry Of Sound and loads of support from the BBC. We had a huge tour planned for 2020 which, like everything else, has been postponed, but I can’t wait to get back out on the road later this year.

How have you found your experience at Tileyard over the last year?

LOVED it. I had a really long break from education, having studied at BIMM back in 2013, but with everything on hold due to COVID-19 I saw an opportunity to spend some time refining my production – I was self taught, so more than anything my lack of confidence was getting in the way of my development.

I was nervous to be the only girl on the course, but my peers and tutors made me feel so comfortable and respected; no one ever assumed I didn’t understand (something I’ve experienced a lot in this field) and everyone was supportive and considerate. I would recommend the course and its environment to anyone looking to nurture their craft – it’s a genuine ‘safe space’ where your career and network will thrive.

How did you feel when Spitfire Audio awarded you their scholarship?

I still don’t have many words! Overwhelmed, honoured, humbled – also just really proud of myself for sticking with it in a field where I am so under-represented. I know that my story here could be the encouragement that some women need to pursue a career in audio production, and so I will be eternally grateful to Spitfire for recognising and endorsing that, as well as believing in me and my value as a professional.

Tell us about what we can expect from your performance at Long Division Festival?

Unapologetic, uncensored female badass-ery. The girls in my band are KILLER – I know they are as excited as I am to be back on stage where we belong.

So, what does the future hold for Georgia Meek?

It’s soooo crazy I actually can’t say anything at all haha! New music is imminent though – and I’ll be revealing all over my socials very very soon!
