Molly Hocking is a singer and performer having already established herself in the music industry from a young age. She shares her experiences in music and her plans for the year.

Tell us about your background, your upbringing, and your introduction to the world of music.

I grew up in the most beautiful seaside town of St.Ives in Cornwall where I had the musical influence of my grandad from a young age, and was intrigued by jazz music and the classic evergreen songs from iconic artists such as Etta James, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra… as he would always be singing and playing that music. I found my love for singing when I played the role of Mary in the school play and my journey started there.

How did you get into the world of performance and songwriting?

I went on to join a local theatre company where I gained confidence and developed my skill for 10 years. When I was 13 I wrote my first song accompanying myself on piano called “Falling.” I actually recorded it and found a love for songwriting and reworking cover songs in my style. Then I auditioned for The Voice UK in 2019 by chance in my local pub. I went on to win it and the whole experience was amazing.

What were some of the barriers you experienced, or still do experience, as a woman in the music industry, if any?

Some of the barriers I have experienced in the music industry on a whole are just having a good team who really believe in me backing me and supporting me, I have just not had any support from the music industry as a whole.

What would you say to your 16-year-old self about being a woman in music… what to expect, the difficulties, the excitements?

I would say to my 16-year-old self to keep at it, never give up, you will have many many many knockbacks, but you will get that break. It’s all about hard work and a bit of luck along the way. Mostly just have fun with where the journey takes me.

What other exciting things have you been working on lately, either work or personally?

I have been getting ready for some exciting shows and gigs. I’ll be supporting Olly Murs in August and have some slots at some festivals with my band. I’m also in studio, songwriting and getting ready to release later on in the year!

What can we look forward to from you in the upcoming year?

More good music that is really true to me. I’ll be doing more shows in London this year and branching out. I’m making this year the best year possible for me at the stage I’m at. I’m really looking forward to whatever this year brings!!
