Welcome Katie To The Tileyard Family

go back

We are excited to introduce Katie, our Community Associate for Tileyard North!

Hello Katie, welcome to the Tileyard Team! Tell us about your new role.

Thanks so much, I’m thrilled to join the team! In my role I’ll be supporting campaign delivery and building relationships with the forthcoming creative community at Tileyard North – assisting in anything from research, marketing-based projects and community-driven activities.

How did you hear about Tileyard?

My drive into Wakefield City Centre passes the Tileyard North site and I couldn’t help but get in touch to share my interest and learn more about the opportunities it will bring to the area. I reached out to the team on LinkedIn and now here we are!

How did you get into the art and creative scene?

I grew up dancing near enough every day of the week, so performing arts was where it all started, I guess. I then studied photography and textiles at school, which set me up for my entry into fashion/promotion at college and university. After moving back home from Manchester since finishing my degree, I started to network and become more integrated into the local creative scene – becoming a founding member of a Wakefield-based arts collective.

What are you most looking forward to with the opening of Tileyard North?

It’s got to be being part of a new creative community, and the connectivity and inspiration that will spark from it. I can’t wait for everyone to see the event spaces and how beautifully the mills have been restored.

What has been inspiring you lately in the world of art, music and fashion?

I’ve been trying my best to attend more exhibitions, events and industry talks to gather inspiration – especially looking at the work my peers are producing and chatting about new projects as much as possible.

And now for some quick-fire questions…

Best gig/concert you’ve been to?

There are too many to choose from! If we’re considering festivals, Sunday at Leeds Festival 2014 was a day I’ll never forget; on the gig front, probably seeing Brand New at Gorilla in Manchester a good few years back.

Favourite fashion trend?

I’m always inspired by Scandinavian street style, but I think my favourite trend – which is more of a staple, really – is the leather jacket. I’m never far away from my AllSaints number.

Favourite movie?

I’ve loved Malcolm & Marie ever since it came out in 2021 – won over by both the cinematography and the soundtrack; Wasted by NNAMDÏ has been a favourite of mine ever since.

And finally, can you give us a sneak preview of what to expect at Tileyard North when it opens?

Expect a creative destination to facilitate innovation and collaboration, within a vibrant community there’s no doubt you’ll want to be a part of! Engaging creatives, from emerging and established artists to dynamic businesses.
